How to Choose a Backpack

No matter if you are buying a backpack for school, hiking or simply as a helpful accessory for day-to-day activities, choosing the right one is necessary.

As we already know, there is no such thing as the perfect backpack to fit everyone. Depending on your needs, you might need more volume, more straps to attach other accessories to it, impermeability and many different features. We have put together a list of useful tips that should make choosing the right backpack an easier task.

Going for the Correct Volume

Fortunately, for customers, backpacks are available in a lot of shapes and sizes and there is a trend of them getting smaller over the past years. This happened due to camping equipment getting lighter and, generally, any day-to-day objects are smaller. There are multiple uses for different volumes; however, we can try to put everything together in the following table:

Liters in liters

15 – 30

School, Short hikes

30 – 50

Longer hikes with more equipment

Full-weekend hike – up to 3 nights

Over 55

Anything over 3 nights

Fitting the Backpack

No matter which backpack you choose from the above categories, you will absolutely need to make sure it feeds your torso. In order to accurately determine the size of the needed backpack you need to measure your back starting with the C7 vertebra all the way down to the hips’ crest. The measurement you get needs to fit the distance from the back strap of the backpack to the hip belt. Since chances are that you are going to have a hard time finding a backpack with exactly your measurements, you can go for one that comes with adjustable torso length. These are known to be the best & rated for quality and comfort at the same time.

Going with the Proper Suspension

Now that you have volume and torso length, the next step is to figure out what you are about to carry in order to determine what kind of suspension you need. Many different suspension elements help you carry big loads:

  • Hip belt

  • Shoulder Straps

  • Load-Lifting Straps

  • Strap for Sternum

  • Back panel
